Care for Community: A Volunteer Coordination Program

MV Community Services continues to respond to the needs of our clients and the community at large. Last week, we worked with Island Grown Initiative, Vineyard Food Equity Network and other community partners to launch Care for Community, a volunteer coordination program to support Island organizations in need of volunteers to continue daily operations.

In less than 48 hours, more than 150 volunteers have signed up to support local nonprofits during this difficult time.  After signing up, volunteers will be matched with an organization seeking volunteers.

“Collaboration and coordination of services will be key to the Island’s ability to address the growing need for access to food by those impacted by this pandemic,”

Rebecca Haag, Executive Director of Island Grown Initiative

There are times Martha’s Vineyard can feel disconnected from the rest of the world. Times when stepping onto the ferry offers a sense of relief and relaxation, and stepping off the boat feels like you’ve escaped all realities of life on the mainland. However, on every ferry rides a microcosm of the bigger problems – and we too are responding to the coronavirus crisis.

Schools and businesses have closed, events have been cancelled and restaurants have shifted to take out.  Similar to cities across the globe, the MV Hospital remains on the frontlines of COVID-19, tirelessly working to keep our community safe and informed.  Despite ever-increasing changes, community collaboration remains persistent.

“Our Island community consistently steps up to support each other in times of need, and this time is no different,”

Julie Fay, Executive Director of MV Community Services
