OAK BLUFFS, MA (May 4, 2026) — Martha’s Vineyard Community Services (MVCS) is proud to announce that Nevin Sayre has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Art Buchwald Award for Outstanding Community Service. This honor recognizes Sayre’s exceptional dedication to MVCS and his inspiring efforts through the Round the Vineyard Challenge—a creative fundraising initiative that exemplifies the spirit, perseverance, and generosity of the Martha’s Vineyard community.
A Vineyard Haven resident, professional windsurfing champion, four-time Collegiate Sailing All-American, and inaugural inductee into the Windsurfing Hall of Fame, Mr. Sayre is also a lifelong advocate for the wellbeing of Martha’s Vineyard residents. He has combined his passion for sailing and adventure with his commitment to supporting essential community programs. His Round the Vineyard Challenge— a solo, 55-mile circumnavigation of the Island on a wing foil board (the latest iteration of windsurfing)—has rallied hundreds of supporters and raised critical funds for MVCS’s vital services, including behavioral health care, early childhood programs, the CONNECT to End Violence initiative, and other resources that strengthen Island life.
From 1988 to 2008, Sayre organized the Martha’s Vineyard Windsurfing Challenge (known as the Vineyard Challenge) to benefit MVCS. During those 20 years, windsurfers from across the globe came to Martha’s Vineyard to test themselves against the elements—while raising funds for the agency that anchors so many island families. ”My mom was passionate about helping Community Services. The Vineyard Challenge was my crazy way of giving back to the Island Community.” Sayre’s mother was an active MVCS board member and helped organize the Possible Dreams Auction during the 1980s.
“We are thrilled to honor Nevin Sayre with the Art Buchwald Award,” said Scott Turton, Interim CEO of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. “Through his energy, creativity, and compassion, Nevin has inspired others to get involved and helped ensure that MVCS continues meeting the evolving needs of our community.”
The Art Buchwald Award for Outstanding Community Service celebrates individuals whose philanthropic leadership reflects the humor, heart, and humanity of the late journalist and longtime MVCS supporter Art Buchwald. Past recipients have included community members whose efforts have made a lasting difference across the Island.
Mr. Sayre will receive the award at MVCS’s annual Possible Dreams Auction—the organization’s signature fundraising event—on Saturday, August 8, 2026. For more information about the Possible Dreams Auction or to support Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, please visit www.mvcommunityservices.org.
